چکیده

In radiology, image quality excellence is a balance between system performance and patient dose, hence x-ray systems must be designed to ensure the maximum image quality is obtained for the lowest consistent dose. The concept of detective quantum efficiency (DQE) is widely used to quantify, understand, measure, and predict the performance of x-ray detectors and imaging systems. Cascaded linear-systems theory can be used to estimate DQE based on the system design parameters and this theoretical DQE can be utilized for determining the impact of various physical processes, such as secondary quantum sinks, noise aliasing, reabsorption noise, and others. However, the prediction of DQE usually requires tremendous efforts to determine each parameter consisting of the cascaded linear-systems model. In this paper, practical DQE formalisms assessing both the photoconductorand scintillator-based flat-panel detectors under quantum-noise-limited operation are described. The developed formalisms are experimentally validated and discussed for their limits. The formalisms described in this paper would be helpful for the rapid prediction of the DQE performances of developing systems as well as the optimal design of systems.

Cone-Beam CT with a Flat-Panel Imager: Noise Considerations for Fully 3-D Computed Tomography

Application of flat-panel imagers (FPIs) in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) offers a promising new modality for fully three-dimensional (3-D) x-ray imaging. Understanding the potential performance and fundamental limitations of such technology, however, requires knowledge of the noise characteristics of the 3-D imaging system. The noise performance of a prototype flat-panel cone-beam CT (F...

Three-Dimensional NEQ Transfer Characteristics of Volume CT using Direct and Indirect-Detection Flat-Panel Imagers

Foremost among the promising imaging performance characteristics of cone-beam CT using flat-panel imagers is the ability to form volumetric images with soft-tissue contrast visibility in combination with sub-millimeter 3-D spatial resolution. Each of these two essential characteristics is intimately related to the spatial-frequency-dependent signal and noise transfer characteristics of the imag...

Amorphous and Polycrystalline Photoconductors for Direct Conversion Flat Panel X-Ray Image Sensors

In the last ten to fifteen years there has been much research in using amorphous and polycrystalline semiconductors as x-ray photoconductors in various x-ray image sensor applications, most notably in flat panel x-ray imagers (FPXIs). We first outline the essential requirements for an ideal large area photoconductor for use in a FPXI, and discuss how some of the current amorphous and polycrysta...

The design and imaging characteristics of dynamic, solid-state, flat-panel x-ray image detectors for digital fluoroscopy and fluorography.

Dynamic, flat-panel, solid-state, x-ray image detectors for use in digital fluoroscopy and fluorography emerged at the turn of the millennium. This new generation of dynamic detectors utilize a thin layer of x-ray absorptive material superimposed upon an electronic active matrix array fabricated in a film of hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H). Dynamic solid-state detectors come in two basi...

Generalized DQE analysis of radiographic and dual-energy imaging using flat-panel detectors.

Analysis of detective quantum efficiency (DQE) is an important component of the investigation of imaging performance for flat-panel detectors (FPDs). Conventional descriptions of DQE are limited, however, in that they take no account of anatomical noise (i.e., image fluctuations caused by overlying anatomy), even though such noise can be the most significant limitation to detectability, often o...
